Come join us for the two day event to learn how to make paper (on April 15th) and write Chinese Calligraphy (on April 22nd)!
The calligraphy that you make in this workshop will be sewn together and displayed at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.
Calligraphy is a practice that has permeated many cultures. In the history of Chinese Calligraphy -- patronization, papermaking and the artists were closely tied together in a local community before papermaking was corporatized. Paper holds memories as we do, from the biological growth of the tree, to the process of extraction, manufacturing, merchandising, consumed, and disposal.
The act of practicing Chinese calligraphy extends to more than just writing Chinese characters; It is a way of life: “Create an impact on the world with every stroke you make.” We all need to tell our stories, and through sharing our stories, we gain the empowerment to create our future. To rebuild a community that extends beyond the Oakland Chinatown, lets come together and share our stories and dreams with each other through bringing every brushstroke to life.
Cultural heritages are built through a long history of people coming together and building on top of old traditions. And through upholding these traditions, we stay connected to our roots and find our grounding in a new environment. But as we find our roots we can build new narratives and a larger intersectional community by sharing our cultural traditions.
